Action before Identity
I think a lot of us wait to become the person that does certain things. In reality, we have to do the things first to become the person we want to become.
Many of carry the names of what our ancestors did. Smith, Carpenter, Farmer, Potter, Baker.
There is this idea that you have to change your identity and then you can start taking actions to truly embody your new identity. This is typically achieved by saying “I am” instead of “I want to be”.
While this may be a nice psychological trick, does it really work? Perhaps, but only because it triggers action. Action is what changes us.
We’re not apart from our actions, people do not look at us and see “us” and then our actions. The identify us based on what they know what we have done, which leads them to believe a spectrum of possibilities of what we may do in the future.
