Daily Message to Oneself
I am writing this in the early days of January, which is always an interesting time for me. I typically the last few weeks of each year in deep reflection. I consider what I did well, I take a deep hard look at my own life choices, and I consider what an ideal year would look like for next year.
Then, like most people, I make goals.
This is fine, and it has been working well for me for close to ten years, but this year I am trying something new. I am adding a new tool.
On the 31st of December, I wrote my future self a message. However, this is not my future self in a distant future, but the future self of tomorrow — of January 1st.
I wrote about how I want to live my life, my daily habits, and my long-term goals. The idea is that I read this daily message each morning, and each morning I tweak it based on the previous day’s experience. So each day, I read the same message, but slightly tweaked from the previous time that I read it, and then I make further changes.
Importantly, this daily message finished with a bullet-point list of my goals for 2024. This is important because it is a good way to keep them top of mind. Because any long-term and important goal boils down to the daily small goals that we set ourselves. And I find that it is sometimes difficult for me to connect the small daily goals with the bigger meaning, and then I get somewhat apathetic. This is a simple way to ensure that I keep a clear and direct line between the trivial and the important.
I’ll report back in a year!
